Northern Pacific Rattlesnake
A peer-reviewed movement study calls Northern Pacific rattlesnake the northernmost viper in the Western Hemisphere. That single fact drives most of what sets it apart from other rattlesnakes. It is the only snake in Washington capable of a venomous bite, per Washington's own wildlife agency. It is the only one of Oregon's 15 native snakes whose venom is dangerous to people, per Oregon's. It is the only rattlesnake in Yosemite National Park and the only venomous snake most of Central and Northern California will ever produce. Nothing about it threatens a building. It chews nothing, nests in no wall, and damages no building material, and it cannot even dig its own burrow. The one risk it puts on the table is the bite. What it also puts on the table, and what almost no pest-control page mentions, is that the winter den is the animal's whole population. Snakes return to the same hibernaculum for generations, and British Columbia's own wildlife account states that if a den is destroyed while the snakes are away, most of those individuals will not find another one and will die when winter arrives. Removing a snake and destroying a den are not the same size of action. There are also three separate legal regimes to keep straight, because California, Oregon, and Washington do not treat this animal the same way at all, plus a live scientific-naming disagreement that runs three ways among sources that are all currently in use.

The season is really two movements, out and back, and both are aimed at the same rock. Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife describes snakes emerging from communal hibernacula in April, spending a couple of weeks basking near the den entrance, then dispersing to summer foraging areas, with the return trip starting in late September and running through October. British Columbia's provincial species account gives the same shape in more detail: a winter period of about 180 days or longer, emergence in March through April, considerable time spent basking at den entrances before anything disperses, and a fall retreat that is fast once temperatures drop, with virtually all snakes back at the hibernaculum by mid-October.

How far they go, and what that means for where you meet one. A peer-reviewed radio-telemetry study in the Thompson-Nicola and Okanagan-Similkameen regions of British Columbia implanted transmitters in 35 male snakes, tracked 30 complete migrations across 10 different denning sites, and measured a mean maximum migration distance of 1,847.8 meters, plus or minus 930.0, with individuals ranging from 373.0 to 3,985.7 meters from the den. The study split its animals cleanly in two. Fifteen snakes climbed into higher-elevation forest and traveled an average 2,359 meters. Fifteen stayed in grassland and traveled 1,337 meters. The forest travelers' routes averaged near the 80th percentile for thermal quality against the 50th percentile for the grassland group, which is to say the longer trip bought a better temperature. Migration direction was den specific rather than random, meaning snakes from one hibernaculum tended to head the same way year after year. A separate genetic study of the same northern populations found males ranging a maximum of roughly 4 kilometers from their den of origin.

The practical version. A property within a kilometer or two of a rocky south-facing slope, a rimrock band, or a talus outcrop is inside the normal summer range of whatever snakes den in that rock, even if the rock is not visible from the yard. Spring and fall are when the two ends of that trip cross yards, driveways, and roads, which is also why Oregon's own snake guidance notes that vehicles account for more snake deaths than any other cause.

One seasonal figure is missing from the record. No published source gives an air-temperature or soil-temperature threshold for local emergence, which would be the genuinely useful number for a homeowner trying to time yard work. What the sources give instead is the calendar, and the calendar shifts with elevation and latitude across a range that runs from sea level in coastal California to valley bottoms in southern interior British Columbia. Treat April through October as the working window and expect the edges to move.

Where They're Found

Northern Pacific rattlesnake is an entirely outdoor, wild animal. It is not a structural invader in the way a rodent or a bat is, and it has no biological reason to be inside a building. Its range covers California and the Pacific Northwest, and the interesting parts are all at the edges.

California is the southern two-thirds of the story. California's Department of Fish and Wildlife calls the western rattlesnake the most widespread rattler in the state and places this particular subspecies, Crotalus oreganus oreganus, throughout Central and coastal Northern California. University of California's own integrated pest management program puts the same animal from the northern part of the state as far south as Santa Barbara County. That southern terminus is not a hard line: the standard California herpetological reference describes this subspecies intergrading with Southern Pacific rattlesnake, Crotalus oreganus helleri, in Santa Barbara County, which is exactly where Southern Pacific rattlesnake takes over. In the Sierra Nevada foothills and the Bay Area it is usually the only venomous snake present at all. The National Park Service states that Yosemite National Park is home to only one rattlesnake, and this is it.

Elevation is genuinely disputed across sources. California's wildlife agency gives the western rattlesnake from sea level to 7,000 feet. University of California's pest management program gives the same 7,000-foot ceiling for this species specifically, while noting the state's rattlesnakes as a group reach about 11,000 feet. The National Park Service puts Yosemite's animals up to about 9,000 feet. The standard California herpetological reference goes higher still, to roughly 11,000 feet with a 2010 record above 12,000 feet in Nevada, although a record that far east is more plausibly a Great Basin animal than this subspecies. Treat 7,000 feet as the well-supported working figure, understand that 9,000 feet is documented by a federal park source, and treat anything above that as contested.

Pacific Northwest, where the Cascade crest does the sorting. Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife is specific: the western rattlesnake occurs only east of the Cascade Mountains, across the East Cascades, Columbia Basin, Okanogan, and Blue Mountain regions, with the westernmost documented point about one mile west of Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge. Habitat there is shrubsteppe, plus Oregon white oak and ponderosa pine, with talus and basalt outcroppings used for overwintering. British Columbia's provincial account independently describes the species as occupying Washington east of the Cascades. The standard California herpetological reference words Washington differently, placing the animal west of the Cascades there, and the two agency sources are the better guide, because they agree with each other and are jurisdiction-specific.

Oregon splits between two subspecies, and getting that split right matters. Oregon's Department of Fish and Wildlife states that the western rattlesnake is Oregon's only indigenous rattlesnake and recognizes two subspecies in the state: this one, in southwestern Oregon, the mid to southern Willamette Valley, and the Columbia Plateau, and the Great Basin rattlesnake in south central and southeastern Oregon. That means the arid southeast corner of Oregon, along with Nevada and Utah, belongs to a different animal entirely. Oregon also carries the only conservation designation this species holds anywhere in California or the Pacific Northwest.

Two range edges at the margins. Idaho is real but poorly pinned down. Idaho Fish and Game lists Crotalus oreganus as native and present in the state and ranks it apparently secure, and the sources disagree on how far in this particular subspecies reaches: British Columbia's provincial account says west-central Idaho, the standard California reference says extreme northwestern Idaho, and a state-specific account associates it with the Salmon, Clearwater, and Snake River drainages. British Columbia is the other edge. The species reaches the dry southern interior valleys of the province, the Similkameen, Okanagan, Kettle, Nicola, and Thompson, and the Fraser around Lytton and Lillooet, typically below 800 meters, and it is the only rattlesnake and the only truly venomous snake in the province. That population is federally threatened in Canada and blue-listed provincially, and much of the best research on the species comes from it.

Alaska and Hawaii. No published record places this species in either. Every range description found runs from northern Mexico up the Pacific slope and interior valleys to southern British Columbia, which puts Alaska hundreds of miles beyond the northern terminus even in the most generous reading, and Hawaii outside the continental range entirely. Neither region should be treated as within this species' distribution.

On a property, the thing to find is rock, and the thing to remember is that this snake cannot dig. University of California's pest management program states it plainly: rattlesnakes cannot dig burrows, so they use burrows dug by rodents. That single limitation explains most of what a homeowner actually sees. Add to that rock crevices, talus, dense brush, tall grass, woodpiles, lumber piles, rotten stumps, and the gap under a garage door, plus the dampness around fountains, ponds, and pool and hot tub equipment enclosures, which draws snakes in summer heat. In the arid interior the highest-value feature by far is a south-facing or warm-aspect rock outcrop with deep fissures, because that is a hibernaculum, and hibernacula are the single most critical habitat feature this species has.

Diet is why a snake keeps coming back. Adults eat mostly small mammals, and the northern-range diet studies are specific: meadow voles, montane voles, and deer mice dominate, with 10 kinds of mammals plus a few small birds recorded, and adults taking animals as large as red squirrels, northern pocket gophers, and young yellow-bellied marmots. Juveniles eat mostly mice, shrews, and lizards. In California, ground squirrels are a staple. Because the main prey animals are active from dusk to dawn, that is when most foraging happens, which is a large part of why a property can hold a snake nobody has seen in daylight. A property producing repeat sightings is usually a property producing rodents.
