Washington State University Extension states damage is most noticeable, and does the most harm, during spring and fall. Breeding runs February through March, with young born in March and April after about a month's gestation. Young adults leave the mother's territory in spring and dig new tunnel systems nearby, which is why an infested area can visibly grow year over year even without a larger mole population.
Where They're Found
Townsend's mole occurs west of the Cascade Mountains in Washington and Oregon, in meadows, fields, pastures, lawns, and golf courses, per Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's own species account. Its documented range runs from extreme southwestern British Columbia south through the Olympic Mountains, and through Oregon's Coast Range and interior valleys east to the Cascade foothills, at elevations up to roughly 1,677 meters in the Oregon Cascades and 1,615 meters in the Olympic Mountains. California belongs in the range on the strength of the state's own wildlife agency data, not assumed from the Pacific Northwest range simply bleeding south. California Department of Fish and Wildlife's California Wildlife Habitat Relationships life history account places Townsend's mole specifically along the North Coast, in Del Norte County and roughly two-thirds of Humboldt County, running south from the Oregon border. No published source places any Scapanus mole in Alaska. Broad, spadelike, with stout claws permanently turned outward for digging. Trapping is the standard method, but the legal trap type is state-specific, and that has to be settled before naming a trap type. In Oregon and California, standard mole traps (harpoon, scissor-jaw, and choker-loop types) are legal and are the tools UC IPM names as the most universally dependable control method. In Washington, those same body-gripping trap designs are illegal statewide under Initiative 713 (RCW 77.15.192, 77.15.194; WAC 220-417-040); legal Washington tools are limited to cage traps and common rat-and-mouse-style traps.
