Townsend's mole is the largest mole species in North America, and it is the animal behind most of the volcano-shaped mounds and raised turf ridges homeowners find in lawns west of the Cascade Mountains. It is not a rodent. It belongs to the order Eulipotyphla, the same order as shrews, and it is a true insectivore that eats mostly earthworms, not roots or bulbs. That single fact matters more here than on most yard-wildlife pages, because Washington State University's own mole-management guide states plainly that most bulb and root damage blamed on moles is actually caused by a rodent instead, the Townsend's vole. Distinguishing the two takes one look: this mole has huge, outward-turned front feet and a short pink tail, while a vole is a small, dark-tailed rodent with tiny front feet. Like every mole, this animal never enters a house, an attic, or a wall void. Every kind of damage it causes happens underground, in soil and turf.

There is no off-season with this animal. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife describes moles as active all year at any time of day, while California's own wildlife habitat account describes yearlong nocturnal activity that occasionally surfaces at night. Both sources agree on the same underlying point: there is no hibernation and no dormant stretch, even though they frame the daily activity pattern differently, and that difference in framing is worth knowing rather than resolved into one answer.

Washington State University Extension states damage is most noticeable, and does the most harm, during spring and fall. Breeding runs February through March, with young born in March and April after about a month's gestation. Young adults leave the mother's territory in spring and dig new tunnel systems nearby, which is why an infested area can visibly grow year over year even without a larger mole population.

Where They're Found

Townsend's mole occurs west of the Cascade Mountains in Washington and Oregon, in meadows, fields, pastures, lawns, and golf courses, per Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's own species account. Its documented range runs from extreme southwestern British Columbia south through the Olympic Mountains, and through Oregon's Coast Range and interior valleys east to the Cascade foothills, at elevations up to roughly 1,677 meters in the Oregon Cascades and 1,615 meters in the Olympic Mountains. The British Columbia portion of that range sits outside the United States and is given here as range context only.

California belongs in the range on the strength of the state's own wildlife agency data, not assumed from the Pacific Northwest range simply bleeding south. California Department of Fish and Wildlife's California Wildlife Habitat Relationships life history account places Townsend's mole specifically along the North Coast, in Del Norte County and roughly two-thirds of Humboldt County, running south from the Oregon border. That is the same coastal Del Norte and Humboldt range the same state agency documents for Townsend's vole, almost certainly reflecting the same moist coastal climate belt extending a short distance past the state line before yielding to drier California terrain further south.

No published source places any Scapanus mole in Alaska. The genus's range is a narrow Pacific coastal strip running from southwestern British Columbia through Washington, Oregon, and that small California coastal pocket, plus a separate, more southerly California mole range further down the coast and into the Sierra Nevada foothills, none of which extends toward Alaska. No published source places any true mole in Hawaii either, consistent with the genus's mainland Pacific range and Hawaii's lack of native terrestrial insectivores. Both checks are confirmed absences, not silent gaps.
