Feral Cat
There is a documented path that runs from cat feces on the ground, through a Hawaii watershed, and into the body of one of the rarest marine mammals on earth. Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that completes its life cycle only in the feline gut. Infected cats shed the parasite's eggs in their feces, those eggs survive in soil and water for up to 24 months, and rain and runoff carry them from land into nearshore ocean water. NOAA Fisheries has confirmed toxoplasmosis as the cause of death in 16 Hawaiian monk seals, a federally Endangered species with roughly 380 animals in the main Hawaiian Islands, and reports that essentially every seal diagnosed with the disease has died from it even when treatment was attempted. On land, the same population of cats preys on native birds that exist nowhere else, including the palila, the uau, and the ao. That is why an animal most people would never call a pest counts as one in Hawaii. Hawaii's own agencies and counties do not agree on what to do next.

Seasonal Timeline

Feral cats are active in Hawaii all year. The state's non-seasonal climate means there is no cold-weather break in activity. Cats hunt mainly at dawn, at dusk, and overnight. What does follow a calendar is the risk to birds, which rises and falls with the nesting season of the seabirds and forest birds being preyed on rather than with anything seasonal in the cats themselves. On reproduction, the numbers below come from general studies of free-roaming cats rather than from a Hawaii-specific field study, so treat them as the species' capacity rather than as a measured local rate.

Two things make the timing worth understanding. First, a female can enter estrus as many as five times a year and reach breeding age herself between 7 and 12 months, so a colony's numbers can move quickly in a climate with no seasonal die-off. Second, the predation risk to birds is not evenly spread across the year: burrow-nesting seabirds are on their nests and at their most vulnerable during their own breeding season, which is when a single cat can do disproportionate damage. Those figures on litters and maturity come from a review of the wider literature on free-roaming cats, not from Hawaii fieldwork.

Where They're Found

Feral cats are a Hawaii problem in a way they are not anywhere else. Feral cats live in every part of the United States, Alaska included. The consequences in Hawaii are documented in a way they are not elsewhere: a federally Endangered marine mammal dying of a cat-borne parasite, and a roster of endemic birds that evolved with no mammalian ground predator and therefore have little innate defense against one. None of that means feral cats are absent from other regions.

Feral cats are established and breeding on all eight main Hawaiian islands, across every habitat type from the coast to upper-elevation mauka forest.

Colonies form where food and shelter allow, and they are not obligatory. Solitary feral cats are common where density is lower. Where colonies do form in Hawaii, they concentrate around harbors, beach parks, and other public land where feeding stations are, or were, maintained by colony caretakers. County rules on that feeding have started to change.

These cats do not den inside structures the way rodents do. They shelter in and around outbuildings, abandoned structures, dense vegetation, rock outcrops, burrows, culverts, and hedgerows. Around homes, that means under decks, in sheds and carports, and in overgrown yard corners rather than in an attic or a wall void.

Home range varies enormously. Studies elsewhere have recorded ranges as small as 1.7 to 2.6 hectares in urban Brooklyn and male ranges spanning 2 to 4 kilometers across in rural Sweden. Satellite-collar research on Kauai found tracked feral cats covering a surprisingly large amount of rugged ground. The practical takeaway for a property owner is that a cat seen in the yard may be ranging across a great deal of land beyond it, including protected habitat.

Feral cats plainly exist in Alaska too. The monk seal and endemic-bird findings above are specific to Hawaii, and no Alaska equivalent has been researched or is claimed.
